Shipbuilding Companies
Feb. 28th, 2006 09:23 amColonial Fleet Systems
The "Government-commissioned" company. All military ships - with a few exceptions - are manufactured by CFS. CFS was one of the first privatized ship-building companies, and they pride themselves on being the best. Nothing but high-end and high-volume products. They are also the only company to have an orbital shipyard above Planet 2.
Washington Industries
One of the main manufacturers of private transport ships, Washingon Industries focuses on low-end ships that are affordable for the upper-middle-class family. Their main seller is the PlanetHopper vehicle, which can easily reach orbit for travel to an orbital colony. They have a few interplanetary-capable vessels in their line, but those are usually too expensive for the average family to own. They also manufacture a few high-end planetside vehicles, both groundcars and aircars.
Babylon Drive Yards
Produces mainly for the corporate sector. BDY manufactures high-volume tankers and other cargo ships for use by various other corporations and companies. These are usually large and unweildy, but are mainly fully automated and only require one pilot. They're usually composed of two seperate sections; the "trailer", where the cargo is held, and a seperate towing "tractor" craft.
BDY is currently developing similarly-designed "trailer" compartments that can be linked up with a BOSMAN unit, allowing a single-pilot tractor-ship to easily tow two or even three trailers, letting the BOSMAN control the individual thrusters and keep them in line.
ColTech Drive Systems, Inc.
A main manufacturer of planetside vehicles (aircars and groundcars), as well as passenger shuttles, which are purchased by the government for public transportation, as well as private "taxi" companies.
New Terra Engineering Corporation
Develops mainly new technologies; engines, life support systems, weapon systems, shielding systems, and the like. Owned by the government. Also manufactures cargo ships of all sizes.
Terrance Transport Corporation
A private company that manufactures private transport ships, both in the passenger and cargo variety. TTC ships are known for their durability and versatility; usually, they are customized and modified seven ways from Sunday barely a week after being sold and shipped off of the showrooms. Some TTC-authorized dealers even go so far as sell their own modification services.
TTC ships generally are hardy little things. Most lines aren't known for their looks, but they're beautiful in their own right. The main selling point of their ships, however, is the durability. TTC ships have been known to keep in the air with half their systems malfunctioning or knocked out.
Jefferson & Takahashi
A "third-party" manufacturer who specializes in customizations and upgrades to ships manufactured by other companies. They are unique in being the only recognized shipbuilding company that doesn't produce their own ships.

World-Building Information
Feb. 21st, 2006 09:02 amThe solar system is comprised of seven planets. The first is a dead rock, being too close to the sun to worldshape it. It has a very slow rotation, however, and proposals have been made to start a mobile mining operation on the dark side of the planet. All these ideas have so far been shot down in committee.
The second planet is far enough out from the sun to be able to easily support life. It's a little bit larger than Lost Terra, and has a little bit higher gravity, but not enough to make it unbearable. There are three major continents, each with a large city with fully-functional public spaceports. There are several stations in orbit. Most of them are Orbital Defense Platforms, left over from the Expansionist Movement (more on that in a later post). Most of these stations have been converted for other uses; habitation, spaceports, warehouses, laboratories - anything that they can be used for. In a much higher orbit is an incredibly large shipyard. Materials are shipped to it, and the larger military ships are built there. (Most ships are built ground-side.)
The third planet is also dead. A mining company is stationed on the surface, and is self-contained. This planet has a few communications sattelites in place, as well as a rather large orbital laboratory. This laboratory is where the organic computer modules - hereafter referred to by the temporary name of BOSMAN Units - are manufactured and shipped out. Shipments are made by large, government-sanctioned corporations. (Think an upgraded version of FedEx and UPS, as opposed to private transport ships, such as Seraph's Wake.) EDIT (4/27/06): Private transport companies do occasionally get hired out, but only after extensive background checks and security clearances.
The fourth planet is a gas giant - it's orange-yellow, and has six moons. One of these moons has been worldshaped, and currently has a population. It's a rather large moon.
Between the fourth and fifth is an asteroid belt. Proposals are currently in committee to build a mining colony just outside the belt, so that metals can be mined from the asteroids. There are rumors of a pirate clan hidden in the asteroids, coming out and hijacking the occasional transport ship towards the outer system; the military has yet to see evidence of piracy, and therefore the rumors remain unsubstantiated.
The fifth planet is also one of gas; two moons, both of them lifeless. A mining colony is situated on the outer-most moon.
The sixth planet is cold and lifeless; there is an abandoned research station situated on the surface. Officially, it was abandoned in favor of the orbital station above Planet Three.
The seventh planet is tiny, frozen, and worthless. There is the remains of a mining colony there, but it has been abandoned for a hundred years.

World-building exercises 2
Feb. 14th, 2006 08:13 pmAll right. Can anyone out there describe to me (or point me in the right direction of) various military and civilian naming conventions for boats and ships? I'm not looking for names, I'm looking for how names are normally chosen.
In specific, I'm looking for naming conventions of the following classes of vessels:
Large Military Combat Ships
Smaller Military Combat Ships
Military Transport Ships - People
Military Transport Ships - Materiel
Private Business Transport Ships, Large (Container Vessel)
Private Business Transport Ships, Small
Privately Owned Large Transport Ships
Fishing Vessels (of various sizes)
If anyone knows off the top of their heads, or if they can point me to sources of information I could use, that would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if there's a class of ship I've missed, let me know.
EDIT: I'm looking for conventions within the United States, as well as other countries' or cultures' naming conventions.

Feb. 13th, 2006 12:33 pmAll right. Say we've got two main powers. They are allied, and trade freely between their two lands, but they have two completely separate governments.
There are also a number of sattelite villages; six colonies, really. They are separate from the two main powers, and each has its own laws, but not separate government.
There is a Council, where various leaders from the two main powers and representatives from each of the six colonies meet up to regulate trade and laws between the two powers and the colonies. The Council is also the Ruling Order for the colonies; while the six colonies may have their own rules and cultures, they each answer to the Council.
I'm looking into various government systems and economies for each of these lands. Over the next few weeks, I'll be throwing a variety of options and thoughts out to you guys. I'd like to bounce them off of you, if I could. Any ideas or suggestions you might have will be invaluable to me; any information or perspectives that I might not be aware of for the different systems would be equally appreciated.
Thank you.
