Print is not dead.

That said, it's becoming a bit of an inconvenience. There's a lot of talk going on about e-readers - Kindle, Nook, Kobo, iPad Library, etc. - that tends to toss people into two very different camps: Print Is Dead, and Books Are Smelly1.

I understand both arguments, and I've often put myself in the Books Are Smelly camp - or at least, I've defended the position. My actual position, though? Lies in the middle. And no, it's not a Golden Mean2 here; it's an actual valid position.

While real, printed books will always be my preference, I've made plenty of trips where I had a whole backpack full of the things, for the travel, or for relaxing while I'm there. I read fast, and will finish a book quickly; that, or I'll want to switch off between a couple ones I've been meaning to read for a while. For situations such as these, I'm hoping to be able to purchase a Kindle for my birthday coming up.

That said, I definitely don't want to be sitting in my favorite chair on a lazy Saturday afternoon with the sunlight filtering in through the window just so, without an actual book in my hand. I'd feel wrong.

So there you have it. The two can definitely co-exist; you just have to keep an open mind.

  1. "Smell is the most powerful trigger to the memory there is. A certain flower, or a whiff of smoke can bring up experiences long forgotten. Books smell musty and rich. The knowledge gained from a computer, it has no texture, no context. It's there and then it's gone. If it's to last, then the getting of knowledge should be tangible, it should be, um, smelly."

  2. I usually call it the Grey Fallacy, in deference to the X-wing series where I first heard of it.

After a week and a half1 of fretting about my dead computer, the FedEx Home Delivery man showed up today with a box.

It was a big box.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give to you... )

  1. Okay, a week and a day. But who's counting?

  2. 18.5 inches on the diagonal. Felix's screen was 17. SIZE DOES MATTER.

The New Computer is in Fort Worth at the moment. Which means it will not be here today, as previously hoped. Current status from the Tracking Number now says Tuesday.

It might have been here Monday were this regular FedEx Ground, but it's FedEx Home Delivery, which I was told by the helpful Lady At FedEx Whose Job It Is To Be Customer Service On Twitter that Home Delivery operates Tuesday through Saturday so that packages can be delivered on Saturdays without extra fees. Which is neat.

Sidebar: I WANT A CUSTOMER SERVICE JOB LIKE THAT. I have excellent text-based customer service etiquette, I have netiquette (which is surprisingly rare in online customer service people), and I know my way around this here newfangled adding machine type box thing. SIGN ME UP.

Debbie is coming over today, though now we are not limited to staying here for lunch since I no longer have to wait for a package. But I'm making tortellini and she's bringing over Freakazoid: Volume 2, so it'll be fine.

Jillian comes in tomorrow. Nervous.

I've tried rebooting my laptop multiple times at this point. Take it any way you want, really: I'm a masochist, I'm overly optimistic, I'm really really stubborn - whichever you think fits best, that's probably what it is.

I've pronounced Felix dead at 2228, Monday, and all attempts to Igor it back to life have failed. Wednesday night, I packed it up and will Shelve It Indefinitely once my new computer comes in. 1

Speaking of which, the monitor arrived yesterday! It actually came in while both myself and Tessa were at work, so the nice FedEx Home Delivery man took it next door to the really sweet old couple in the unit next to us. They signed for it and held it for me until I got home from work. They're really nice people, and one of these days I'm going to actually ask them their names.

I'm going to set up the monitor tonight when I get home, to prepare for The New Computer.

Speaking of The New Computer, it was supposed to have been built today. Turns out the queue was smaller than the website predicted, and it was built (and shipped out) on Wednesday. The tracking number says Estimated Delivery: August 15th, which confused me since FedEx doesn't deliver on Saturdays unless you pay extra and I went with the free Standard Shipping, but then I remembered that Home Delivery operates on different rules.

The New Computer should be put together and running smoothly tomorrow night, but I'm not going to actually give it the name I've picked out until I know it's working properly. Likewise for any date estimates on the next episode of Made of Fail - Dayna wanted to know when I wanted to reschedule the episode we were supposed to record tomorrow3, and I really don't want to give her a date until The New Computer is working. Having watched [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda over the last two weeks has taught me to wait and see if The New Computer even turns on.

Whenever we do record it, however, it'll be pretty awesome. Getting back to basics. Jillian's even agreed to do a regular Music News segment, which she'll prerecord for us if she's not able to make the actual recording date. (That might even work better in some cases, so that I can just say "And now, here's Jillian with the Music News", and drop in her segment during editing.)

EDIT: Tracking number now says that The New Computer arrives on Tuesday, not Saturday. Bit of a change there, but I guess it's still better than my original estimate of next Friday.

  1. I'm using the tag "bow down before skynet" to refer to all Compocalypse2 entries I have.

  2. The term "Compocalypse" coined by [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda who is having a REALLY BAD MONTH so give her lots of hugs.

  3. You know. Before half the people on my LiveJournal friendslist had their computers die on them. I'm not even exaggerating on that; for the last couple months I've seen nothing but "MY COMPUTER DIED" all the way down the page.

I'm placing the order for the first choice now.

This is exciting. Already thinking of new names. Hopefully by this time next week I won't have to use Tessa's computer for updates.

Essential large-scale purchases suck, though. I'm going to have to rebudget my fall now.

EDIT: Totally neat bonus: This purchase puts me over the Free Ticket threshold on my frequent flyer miles. Next vacation I take, I won't have to pay for the flight (except for baggage).

EDIT 2: Order placed; my machine will be built on the 14th. Free shipping!

SON OF EDIT: Just to clarify; it's the top build in my previous post. I'm picking up a monitor too since I don't have one (and a fresh pair of speakers since the pair I'm using technically aren't mine), so deduct about a hundred twenty/hundred thirty from that cost and that's what the actual computer itself is. (Minus the additional $30 coupon.)

It also doesn't say in that screencap, but it includes a free upgrade to Windows 7 when that comes out, and I'll be either borrowing my father's copy of Office 2000 or asking my uncle for a copy of 2007. Since the latter is dependant on my father not being able to find the discs, this should tell you that I really don't want to spend any more money for the rest of the year.

Posting from roommate's computer

The LCD display of my computer is fried.

Before anyone says anything, I will explain. Earlier this evening, I put in my recovery OS disc to reformat the hard drive; resetting it to factory settings. I backed up all my stuff on my external before I did so - I was expecting to do this on Saturday but I never got around to it.

The reformat was a complete success, and it was really fast, too. I had a fresh computer with nothing but Vista on it. I started installing iTunes and all my other essential programs on it, and the Windows Update was going on in the background.

Around two hours ago, I left to pick up my parents from the airport. They had spent the last week and a half in Alaska, on a cruise. I came back about half an hour ago to a shut-down computer, which I figured was the result of the installation of things forcing a restart.

I turned it on, and there were strange vertical lines across the display while the Everex bootup and then the Windows bootup started. Then the screen went white, then faded to black with multicolored vertical lines down the screen. And when I say faded, I mean the kind of slow from one point then outward faded when an LCD loses power.

That should have NOTHING to do with reformatting the hard drive. It won't even go to the bootup screen anymore (that I can tell); the LCD is fried. On a notebook, I don't think that's something that can be replaced. I may need to buy a new computer sooner than I planned - I was thinking of getting one in October, when I'll have an extra paycheck.

EDIT: Gen (or anyone else), the two I'm looking at right now are these:
