Burning ring of fire.

I was listening to the radio this morning on the way to work.

This may not seem like a surprise, but there's never been anything good on the radio in the early morning. My favorite stations all have talkshow things on at that time; especially Q101, which is the home of Mancow. I used to like listening to Mancow, but it just seems so...I don't know. Forced.

Lately, though, I've noticed something. Q101 is actually playing music in the morning. I don't know why; maybe Mancow got cancelled, or maybe he went to satellite radio like Howard Stern. I don't know, maybe he'll be back in the fall. But for now, it's playing music in the mornings again. And what I like about Q101 is that in the past year or so, it's stopped the whole sponsored playlist thing that it had been doing, and opened up its entire stock of music. You can hear songs that it played back in '93 right next to songs from today. Depeche Mode and Nirvana right next to Nickelback. Classic Disturbed. You know, all the good stuff.

This morning, I heard Johnny Cash on Q101. He was covering a Nine Inch Nails song.

It was the greatest thing I have ever heard. Ever.

We have a radio station here... BobFM. It plays everything. Oldies and newbies. It's obviously a packaged format, but I can't complain. And when they start playing a whiney emo song... I just flip to one of the oldies stations.

Oldies being from the 60's forward. Gah! I remember when Oldies meant stuff from the 40's and 50's!!!! *gonk*

We've got that. JackFM replaced the oldies channel, while one of my rock stations became the new oldies channel.

I haven't listened to morning radio in ages. I did listen to Mancow a week ago. Weird that they didn't play him. Maybe he's out sick or something. =P I do remember a time where his clock was wrong and he was on for an hour more than intended.

They haven't played him all week, instead playing music - to my great delight - and have called this the Summer of Music Mornings.

Really? I haven't watched the news lately.

Yay for music in the mornings again! :D

Well, that would explain it.

Wait, wait, wait...

Are you implying you have never heard Johnny's cover of "Hurt" before?

Sad.

I miss Q101. Every time I go home, I'm delighted to hear their shuffled playlist. If only I could catch them playing "Doll Parts" or something by the Smoking Popes, I'd be in heaven.

Until yesterday, I had no idea that Johnny Cash had even known who Nine Inch Nails were. I was pleasantly surprised, and actually like his cover more than the original.
