What's with the weekend?

So my parents and I discussed the computer/internet situation again. I was able to prove what I needed to, and they voiced their concerns.
Yesterday, they decided to "help" me choose a computer. Instead of me buying a new computer with the specifications I want, they wanted me to choose instead Kelly's old computer, and let me upgrade it as much as I can. How old is Kelly's old computer? It's when an 8 gigabyte was considered big.
Not 80. 8.
After finding out that there isn't a second slot for a hard drive (thus making it easy to transfer everything to the 80 gig drive that I purchased yesterday), my dad decided that maybe that computer wasn't such a good idea. So he offered something that I found much better; the current family computer that I use normally. That would become my computer, I'd switch the CD drive for the RW one in Kelly's old one, switch out the 16 gigabyte hard drive for the new one I bought, and upgrade the memory past 256 (512 may or may not be the max for that one; I'll go for a gig if I can). Still cheaper than buying my own computer, I guess.
Why didn't I take their second option and buy my own computer anyway? My parents hit me with the "You really should be saving your money, and we don't want you spending it on a computer if you don't have to."
Based on past experiences with similar phrasings, this translates to "You'll take our offer or we'll make sure that you won't get internet access in your room."
So I took what I could get and am praying that I'm able to upgrade it as much as I need to.
Regardless, I really need to find some way to easily afford moving out.

Date: 2006-05-31 12:07 pm (UTC)Brother, no. That computer is slower than the broken one on the desk in our living room.
No. Really, that just won't do for what you want it for. Really.

Date: 2006-05-31 01:41 pm (UTC)Nothing on that PC is remotely salvageable, Kevin.
The PC, even if it adheres to industry standards (doubtful for an HP Vectra), uses the old AT standard, while PCs have been using the ATX standard since 2003 or so. So nothing on that machine (RAM, motherboard, power supply, case) is compatible with anything released today. You would be hard-pressed to even find a modern video card that would work with it, even if you decided to upgrade it.
WoW doesn't even require that much power to run, relative to modern standards, but I doubt it would even start up on that PC.
It's not worth it, Kevin. I'm sorry, brother, but it would be better to wait and continue to bargain than to accept this machine, unless you want to sacrifice any chance of playing games on the PC, period.

I'll keep trying.
