Or, in which the highways of Chicago are wrought with construction and Nobody Is Surprised1

One of my duties for the convention was the transport of three Very Special Guests, who were flying in to O'Hare, so I picked up Esther Friesner and her husband Walter, and we went to lunch. I had been instructed to take them to a place that is friendly towards Walter's allergies, so I had e-mailed Esther previously with a list of restaurants near the airport so's they could choose. We ended up going to Harry Caray's, which was a treat since I'd never been to one either.

They had Goose Island sodas. This makes a lot of sense, but I always like it when restaurants have Goose Island. Their Spicy Ginger is one of my favorites and I had it there.

After lunch, we swung back into the airport to pick up Colin Smythe, who is horribly charming and delightful to talk to, and we drove up to Madison.

Madison, as it turns out, is really only about two and a half hours away, and it's right off the highway that's by my apartment, so bonus there2. The trip was made all the more awesome simply by listening to the conversations between Esther, Walter and Colin, with only the occasional interjection of my own thoughts.

Upon arriving at the hotel, I caught up with Emily and said hello.

Got my registration stuff, badge, etc. and unloaded my car into the room, which was found on the convention's roomshare board; I shared with three other people, which meant I brought my air mattress and slept on the floor.

Shortly after arriving was the rehearsals for the Opening Ceremonies; basically, I was told to meet back in-costume (I was part of the Procession of Gods as Bilius) the next day, so it was off to dinner with Emily, Esther, Walter, Colin, and Terry.

Oh yeah, by the way, I got to have dinner with Terry. I mostly sat back and watched him and Esther go at it with considerable aplomb. The man is frighteningly quick-witted, especially with puns and innuendo. He makes Dayna and I on our A game look like, well, Karl3.

Upon returning to the hotel, I finished getting settled in and met my roommates. One of them looked at me and said, "Oh, you are Kevin from Made of Fail. When I saw your name, I wondered."4

  1. No, really, nobody is surprised.

  2. I was also surprised to find out that Wisconsin Dells is right up the road from there, as well, which was almost useful in that my sister was there right as I was leaving Madison and may have needed to come home early. Would have been convenient for me, too, since hey, not terribly far out of my way.

  3. ilu Karl

  4. When I confirmed this, her next words were, and I quote, "Take a shot." I love that we've developed our own running gags to the degree that the fans are using them on us.

... more importantly, did you meet Patrick Rothfuss?

Ohhh, I thought that guy looked familiar. No, I didn't actually talk to him at any point but I did see him around the convention.

That's too bad.
I'll be honest, I would rather meet Rothfuss than Pratchett - and I like Pratchett an awful lot.
