alliancesjrMost of you know that I'm still slowly easing myself into the Horror genre. Dayna's most recently gotten me into Freddyfests, and introduced me to an awesome movie that I may or may not have mentioned here, called "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon". Plus, I had been gradually reading through the Stephen King collection, and enjoying it immensely.
IT is still my favorite horror novel, and it still scares the crap out of me when I read it. I'm on my...tenth readthrough now, since I first picked it up way back in high school.
Tessa, incidentally, has gotten me somewhat back into anime with Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (lit., Higurashi [the breed of cicada known as Tanna japonensis]: When They Cry, or When the Higurashi Cry), and it's been sucking me in. It's a series that's an adaptation of a suspense/horror game series of the same name.
The plot is absolutely phenomenal; there are eight chapters (which were the eight original games), four in the Question Arc and four in the Answer Arc. It's set up so that each chapter is fairly standalone (though the first one is more standalone than the rest, and is currently in post-production as a live-action movie), and it features a group of kids who find themselves sucked into a murder mystery. Each chapter is a retelling of the story from a different perspective, and different events happen in each chapter - it's something like the timeline resets itself after the end of each chapter. During the second half of the series, the "Answer Arc", it's revealed what the murders are all about and even why it seems like the timeline resets itself.
I've been absolutely hooked on this. Thought I should mention it. Check it out.

Date: 2008-09-11 02:20 pm (UTC)Seriously such an amazing series. Horror isn't even really my cup of tea and this is still easily my favorite anime ever.
The localized DVDs are kind of tricky to find nowadays (Not sure if they even brought the whole first season over anyways, but they are available online even if you can't really find them in stores), but it's worth the effort of finding them.
The manga is finally being released in the U.S., and the live action movie adaptation is also in the works, so hopefully if the series picks up in popularity commercially (it's already rapidly gaining a huge fanbase online), there will be a re-release of the DVDs before too long.
