Mega update.

So I haven't been updating this as often as I'd like. I'll get caught up.
This is going to be long, so I'll separate it with cut tags and line breaks.
Strikethrough '07
Last week, some of you may have noticed hundreds of journals and communities being suspended. This was done in an attempt to purge LiveJournal of all journals and communities of known sex offenders - specifically, child molesters - and those that promote or otherwise advertise illegal activities, including (but not limited to) sexual offenses. Such journals are against the Terms of Service, and were always subject to deletion at any time.
This, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. However, the majority of the journals were purged simply because of similarly-themed content, both with fiction and support groups.
In other words, what got axed were a lot of fanfiction communities and support communities for rape/incest/molestation victims.
LiveJournal, unsurprisingly, revolted. Images were made, banners and icons alike. Protests were staged, condemning SixApart and LiveJournal for their actions. So much protest went on that the CEO of SixApart made a series of public apologies and status updates, promising the restoration of wrongly-suspended.
My personal thoughts on this have shifted throughout the entire thing, but as it is, I still support LiveJournal. I was one of those protesting the mass deletion - mostly because it was all done secretly. But SixApart stepped up and took full responsibility and are in the process of making amends.
I clarify. They could have waved their hands and said, "Hey, this is our decision, we own this place, we'll do what we want," but they didn't. It might have been nothing but "Oh crap we'll lose all our subscribers", or it might not have been, but regardless of the motive, the effort is made.
I will continue to have a Paid account. I know that because I am a paying customer - even if I'm one drop in the ocean - I have a voice, and I can lodge formal complaints with the way LiveJournal is run. It is a right that I do not exercise often, but the fact that I have that right is often knowledge enough.
Strikethrough '07, as it is collectively known, will not be forgotten, but it has been forgiven, and it is on the tail end of reparations. For some it was the last straw, but mistakes will always be made. It is how they are corrected that gets them my vote.
Employment
Most of you probably know that the site I currently work at is closing. I have been trying to find a new site to be transferred to - as the company I work for mostly places the responsibility on the employees, apparently - but none of my applications have returned results.
Until Thursday. I got a call from HR, saying that I had an interview at a location in Glenview on Friday. Glenview was one of the locations I had applied to with my fingers crossed, as I live on the northern edge of Morton Grove, which borders thus with the southern edge of Glenview. Anywhere in Glenview would be less than a fifteen minute drive for me.
The location? The Kraft corporate headquarters on Golf Road. Less than ten blocks from my house. I kid you not, it is this close.
The interview on Friday was short, but I got a really good feeling from it. I'll call back by the end of this week if I haven't heard anything; this site closes at the end of June, and I need a new position by the beginning of July.
Fingers crossed, people.
Also, on a related side-note, Friday was supposed to be the last day I had ability to Internet from work. This morning I came in and got a nice surprise; computer was still here and the connection was still valid. However, it could cut out at any time.
AVON Walk for Breast Cancer
I posted a while back asking for donations for my mother to participate in the AVON Walk Chicago. She more than met her requirement, and spent the last few weeks training. It took place this weekend. She was dropped off Saturday morning, and spent all day walking throughout a designated path. The walking continued Sunday, and they were picked up near the YMCA building all the way in Niles, not terribly far south of my house. The closing ceremonies were yesterday outside Soldier Field, and we took two cars. It was my first time driving that far downtown; I was following my dad, but even so. I dislike driving in the city and avoid it at all costs, but you have to admit that the sudden view of the skyline when going south on I-94 is absolutely stunning.
I should have taken pictures. I took a couple pictures of my mother with my phone, but I was stupid and forgot to push the second button to save it. I just noticed that today as I was trying to send the pictures to my e-mail - thus allowing them to be posted in this entry - but there were none to be found.
She walked 26 miles over two days after raising thousands of dollars for the AVON Breast Cancer Foundation. The closing ceremonies were very emotional, and I had to hide the fact that I was crying.
I'm very proud of her.
I'm searching for a donation link button of some sort; once I find it, I will append it to all internet-related places I visit or maintain.
One final note: I have precisely one payment left on my car. When that happens, the title will be signed over to me, and I will legally own a vehicle. I will need to get my own insurance now, and handle all village stickers and license plate dealies myself, but the fact remains; I will own a car.
I am incredibly excited.
This is going to be long, so I'll separate it with cut tags and line breaks.

Date: 2007-06-04 06:55 pm (UTC)One of my co-workers walks, and I always donate to her. If I've got any extra cash after bill time comes around, I'll throw it at the button you put up, ok?
I just bought the first car I have ever owned outright that was less than 15 years old. It feels awesome, doesn't it?
