I've been having a lot of dreams lately; dreams that turn into full-scale ponderings during the day. Usually, when my hands are occupied but my mind is not, I start thinking, creating.

There's a book series I want to write. Not the space story Jillian and I thought of while discussing an Outlaw Star episode, or the Great Rift War period of my D&D campaign, but an original story.

It would start with the first book in the series, which is about a police detective/officer/ex-SWAT, what have you, waking up after a short coma to find that his city is full of superheroes. And he comes to realize that any time there is a superhero, be it in a comic or a movie or a cartoon, the local police tend to degenerate to comic relief or cannon fodder (lol canon fodder).

What if that's the idea?

Dayna, you're incredibly versed in current-DC canon. Has this been explored at all?

Not as far as I know; however, the idea of "from the little guy's perspective" has been done over in MARVELS and GOTHAM NIGHTS, and Greg Rucka is well-known for his portrayal of such things i.e. with Renee Montoya. Having "regular heroes" coping with the idea of "superheroes" in their world is definitely old hat, but I don't think I've ever seen it played out as a farce. More power to you if you can make that work.

Make sure your police dude reads the "Sidekick list" (from the same guys who brought us the evil overlord list), or whatever list is most applicable.

Also, would be nice to see said police officer have a family, maybe kids, show angles not related to work.....

ooooooh. You could have family becoming superhero-ey.
