I've been hearing really good things about PvE Beastmaster specs post 2.1 patch. The new mend pet apparently allows BM pets to damned near solo while their masters loot and skin the corpses they leave behind.
I can't really speak to instance or raid builds - I know that Improved Traps is pretty much considered the [i]de facto[/i] standard for instancing nowadays, since trapping is now considered an important form of crowd control. I also know that most hunters I've grouped with don't instance with their pets out, rendering a BM spec nearly useless.
I don't know. Hunter is one of two classes I haven't gotten past L20 (Warrior being the other), so I can't really comment other than hearsay and my own personal observations from grouping with our guild hunters.
