Saturday, March 10

The morning was dark and grey, a standard Chicago midwinter's morning. My father, who I had reminded the night before that he had agreed to driving me to the airport, was still asleep. My mother, clad in her sleepwear, had to put her sandals on and drive me in his stead. She waited until her taped show was over, seeing as how we live about ten-to-fifteen minutes from O'Hare.

I arrived at 7-ish. My flight was scheduled for 8:10, and the line for security extended halfway down the terminal. Thankfully, all the lanes were open, and the line was constantly moving. Slowly, but moving nonetheless. I played my part in the pachinko-style security checkpoint, and, pausing for a moment to put my shoes back on, headed towards my gate.

I had a few minutes, so I bought a berry smoothie. By the time I finished, it was time for boarding.

The flight was fairly easy. I usually read on airplanes; I read Peter David's One Knight Only that I had borrowed from Dayna. As the miles ticked down between myself and the object of my anticipation, anxiety grew. With that grew fear and paranoia. What if she didn't like me after all? What if it was really awkward?

I arrived at the airport about ten-to-fifteen minutes early. Jillian and her father were still on their way to come pick me up, so I grabbed my suitcase from Baggage Claim and sat outside to read Good Omens and wait. After a bit of confusion as to which terminal I arrived at, I suddenly heard a melodious voice lifted in a sarcastic tone. "What, reading? You nerd."

I looked up, and there she was. Dressed in a flowing white off-the-shoulder blouse and a bright and cheery orange skirt, there in front of me stood the one I had waited over a year to meet. I looked into her eyes, and my fears were gone. My paranoid delusions were silenced. Looking into her eyes, I found I was home.

Joking, light-hearted bickering, and random tour guide announcements took place during the ride to her house. I realized that I was completely at ease talking to her, as I normally am over the phone.

The first moment I had her alone, I dropped my backpack and did what I had wanted to do for well over a year. She didn't look like she was expecting it, but quickly eased into our first kiss, one of many to come throughout the week.

The rest of the day was spent settling in. Cuddling up on the couch, checking out internet and World of Warcraft, and watching Firefly were the day's activities, as well as the family going out and getting an enormous Tex-Mex dinner at a relatively new restaurant.

The week was shaping up to be something special.
